Connecting Customer Owned Generation

Customer owned generation (10 MW or less) refers to electricity production that is created by the customer using renewable energy (e.g. wind or solar) or non-renewable energy (e.g. fossil fuels). This generation must meet applicable provincial, federal, and municipal licenses, permits, and approvals. Based on the type of customer owned generation used, the customer can use energy they produce to meet their own needs and/or possibly sell excess production to Manitoba Hydro.

Customer owned generation refers to energy production smaller than 10 megawatts (MW) and at a voltage no greater than 25 kV.

Benefits of customer owned generation can include:

  • improving reliability of power supply;
  • reducing electricity costs in some cases;
  • lowering emissions of air pollutants.

Note of caution: Manitoba Hydro’s experience shows that smaller power projects can be costly to set up and operate. Customers are encouraged to evaluate the amount of energy you expect to produce and the economics of the project to determine your overall cost of electricity.
