Anybody can be a target for a fraud or scam, so it’s important to know the signs of when you’re being misled. Here are some tips on how to protect yourself and your money from people impersonating Manitoba Hydro.
Types of frauds and scams
Door-to-door
Door-to-door scams are when someone comes to your home impersonating Manitoba Hydro. Before you let them in, ask for their name and identification card. Our employees will:
- have an official ID card with their name and photo
- approach you in a professional and courteous manner
- take the time to confirm their identities for your safety
- will not pressure you to allow them into your home
- will never try to sell you any product or service
An email scam usually looks like a fake energy bill with an outstanding balance. If you receive one:
- Do not reply to the email.
- Avoid clicking on any links.
- Never give any personal or payment information via email.
- Check your balance and payment options in your online account.
Phone calls & text messages
Phone and text scams usually sound like the scammer is from Manitoba Hydro and that your account is in arrears and needs to be paid. While we may call you for a variety of reasons (including overdue bill reminders), we don’t:
- Accept payment over the phone.
- Take PayPal, money transfers or credit card payments.
- Make cold calls to sell products or services.
If you’re unsure if a caller is really us, hang up the phone and call us: 1-888-624-9376. You can also check your online account to see if you have an overdue bill. If you need to pay your bill, see all available payment options.
