Charging your device safely

This article was published in April 2021 and may be outdated.

They’re such a convenience in our lives, we almost take them for granted. To safely charge your phone or tablet and extend the battery’s life, follow these charging habits:

  • Always use the charging cord and power adapter that came with your device. Cheap replacement cords and adapters can be of poor quality and not charge your device properly. And different phones charge differently, so don’t mix up chargers.
  • Always charge your device on a hard, flat surface with good circulation. Never charge your phone in bed at night or near a sink or bathtub.
  • Once a device is charged, unplug it to avoid depleting the battery or overheating.
  • Unplug your battery charger when it’s not in use. A battery charger can draw electricity even when the device isn’t charging.
