I was saddened to learn today of the passing of The Honourable Murray Sinclair, CC OM MSC. It is a sentiment shared across Manitoba Hydro, where he is greatly respected as a leader in the community and for his service to the province and country.
Mr. Sinclair, from Manitoba’s Peguis First Nation, rose to prominence as a lawyer and champion for justice for Indigenous peoples, eventually becoming the first Indigenous judge in Manitoba and only the second in Canada.
Mr. Sinclair carried his advocacy for the rights of Indigenous people to the halls of power in Ottawa after being appointed a Senator.
But it is perhaps Mr. Sinclair’s role as chief commissioner of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission for which he will be remembered most. He gave voice to thousands of survivors of the residential school system, revealed the awful truth of that injustice to all Canadians, and set us all on the path to reconciliation. Manitoba Hydro works closely with many Indigenous communities and our efforts have been significantly shaped by the Calls to Action for business put forward in the Commission’s Final Report.
On behalf of Manitoba Hydro, I extend our deepest condolences to Mr. Sinclair’s family and community on the loss of this remarkable man.
Allan Danroth (Manitoba Hydro President and CEO)
